about

In composing immersive, spatial sound installations, Mary Edwards practices what architect Juhani Pallasmaa calls "Sensuous Minimalism," where a certain neutrality, restraint and silence are an inherent quality of the discipline: "The significance [of architecture] is not in its material form, but in its capacity to reveal deeper layers of existence.”

This environmentally poetic perspective of solitude and connectivity attempts an elegance and ease of movement in light of adversity. The Wa(l)king Pattern is comprised of rhythmic and tonal inflections along the stretch of Holland Road in Register, Georgia, in perpetuity to Edwards' mother, Jewel Edwards, and her resolute 4am daily walk to school as she navigated fox trails—and the Jim Crow laws of the 1930s segregated American South—cultivating an ecological stewardship through the guidance of devotional humming of disembodied voices.
